Exploring 10 Common Spirit Animal Messages

spirit animal messages

Spirit Animal Messages are all around you, if you just take the time to look. Ever see an animal around you that seems like an unusual occurrence? Maybe you’ve had a bee buzz in front of you as if it’s checking you out. Maybe a butterfly lands right in front of you just as you are thinking of a passed loved one. Maybe a bird just won’t stop talking right at you. These aren’t coincidental. Everything happens for a reason. These could be Spirit Animal messages in your environment.

Spirit Guides often communicate through Spirit Animal messages because animals are willing to help and easy to manipulate. The spirit animals deliver guidance, warnings, support, or reassurance, depending on what you are thinking or working on in your life.

However, many of us struggle to understand what we are being told when an animal comes into our presence. Especially, if the animal is an unusual one for your surroundings, it is a message.

As with many messages from Spirit, Spirit Animal messages can be interpreted from your own experience. For example, if your grandmother loved watching birds, and her favorite bird was a red cardinal, it is perfectly fine to speak to your grandmother every time you see a red cardinal. That will develop your communication skills with your guides and ancestors.

My late husband was a fly fisherman. He loved to tell a story about an Alabama bird, the Yellowhammer. He also loved studying yellow butterflies and their migration path. So, every time I see a yellow bird or yellow butterfly, I speak to it and thank my late husband for letting me know he is around.

One way to interpret a sighting is to apply the qualities of the animal to the message. For example, a butterfly is commonly used to send messages. Often, it brings the message of rebirth and/or freedom. Maybe you need a fresh start.

Many spiritual philosophers who have studied Spirit Animal messages have developed general messages. As with many spirit messages, more than one animal can mean more than one thing. They often send similar and the same messages. Your guides will use whatever is at their disposal to send you a message.

Here are a few general Spirit Animal messages that could be messages for you.

  1. Butterflies – Revival, reawakening, rebirth. An encouragement to trust your path.
  2. Deer – Grace, gentleness, unconditional love, and intuition. Someone is telling you to stay calm, at peace, and trust your instinct. Be vigilant, however.
  3. Dragonflies – Change, transformation, spiritual awakening. Dragonflies live a relatively short time. They are also often associated with a connection to the afterlife. If you see a dragonfly, it could mean someone on the other side is encouraging you to live fully and embrace quick change.
  4. Ravens/crows – Mystery, change, wisdom. These black birds are often associated with transformation and awakening in your spiritual life. If you see these, it is a sign that you are growing.
  5. Ladybugs – Happiness, angelic presence, luck. Often associated with Mary, the mother of Jesus, ladybugs mean nothing but good. They send a message that good fortune and blessings are on the way.

I have to pause and tell a quick story about ladybugs. I was going through a particularly difficult time, and I felt very alone and unsupported. I walked upstairs to an attic area and came upon a swarm of ladybugs. I didn’t know they would swarm. What an encouragement that better times were on the way, and they were.

  1. Owls – Intuition, wisdom, mysticism. Owls encourage us to trust our inner selves, especially by looking within ourselves. Any time I ever see owls, even at a zoo, it dramatically feels like I’m somehow receiving Spirit Animal messages. (Owls creep me out, a little.)
  2. Hawks – Clarity, intelligence, vision. Seeing a hawk tells us to act like a hawk. Trust your instincts and look with precision and clarity, and truth.
  3. Bats – Instinct, faith, and trust. Many cultures see these as symbols of good luck. My favorite Spirit Animal message that they bring is that better times are ahead.

I have to pause again and tell another quick story. This time it is about bats. When my first husband left, I had no job and two little kids. I was devastated, sad, and depressed, but I had to keep going for my precious kiddos. During that time I had about a dozen bats take up residence in my attic. Well…not really in my attic . They were in the vent that was blocked with a screen in the attic. They never really got in.

Interestingly, when I married my second husband, they left. I like to think they went to another home to offer support and encouragement.

9. Your fur baby or pet – Yes, your pet is a messenger. They filter messages all the time. Ever had your pet try to comfort you when you are upset? My dog, Gracie, will pick up on the energy around me. If I am reading for someone, many times at a significant point in the conversation, she will come over to me and just stand there. Often, the person on the other end of the phone is upset, and she comes to lend support. How did she know? She filters Spirit Animal messages for me because she is attached energetically to me. My guides can send love and support through her all the time.

10. Mice – Adaptability, humility, and the power of the small. We often overlook these critters as bringers of Spirit Animal messages. Because they are considered vermin and adversarial, we often fail to consider them as bringing a message. We often attract what we are, and mice in your environment could be a message to slow down and relax a little more.

Spirit Guides might send a butterfly as a message of transformation, a deer for support, and a bat for a promise of better times. Either way, Spirit Animal messages and nature have got you.

4 steps when you receive Animal Spirit messages

    1. Say “Thank you.” – Acknowledge that you see it. Remember, you are always developing your conversation skills with your guides. Take a photo. Write down the details. How was it acting? Don’t dismiss it.
    2. Identify what you were thinking – Was there a particular question you were asking right before your sighting? Is there an issue that dominates your thoughts?
    3. Look up the meaning – Since Spirit Animal Messages are personal, you have to use your inner self for guidance as to their meaning. As you scan different meanings, which one feels the best? Which meaning do you want? Whatever it is, tell your guides that you accept that message. Again, remember, you are always developing your conversation abilities with your guides.
    4. Ask for confirmation – If you are unsure, ask your guides to send something else. However, you have to remain open for the message to come through. They may send another one just like it, or they may send a song, or a YouTube video title, or a conversation. Keep aware.

    Peace, Y’all–Leah
