6 Things You May Need in Your Meditation Space

meditation space

Creating a meditation space can be a transformative experience that allows you to connect with your inner self and find peace amidst the chaos of everyday life. But what exactly do you need to make your meditation space truly conducive to meditation, introspection, and spiritual growth? In this article, we will explore 6 elements that your meditative space may need.

When it comes to designing a meditation space, there are several key factors to consider. Here are my 6 recommendations that you may need to optimize your sacred sanctuary for yourself.

Comfortable Seating

The first thing you need in your meditation space is a comfortable place to sit. Whether it’s a cozy armchair, a cushioned meditation cushion, or a soft rug on the floor, having a comfortable seat will allow you to relax and focus without distractions. Don’t go for the pretty!! I find the cutest seating ideas in the “she shed” that I am always creating and recreating in my mind and on Pinterest. However, as we all know, cute does not equate to functional. Comfort is key. An old worn armchair or couch that you cover with something cute works great!

Your goal is to be able to relax enough to feel weightless. Meditation goals often include moving into a state where you are somewhat numb. Sitting on an adorable seating chest created from pallets isn’t likely to give you that. (And by the way, that is a statement I am saying to myself.)

Natural Elements

Incorporating natural elements into your meditation space can help you feel more connected to the earth and the universe. You know, that ever prevalent word “grounding.” Consider adding the 4 elements: earth, fire, wind, and water.

Earth represents the physical and practical self.  You can connect to earth with a plant, or as in my case, a pot of earth with a fake plant.  Crystals, seashells, wood, or other natural objects that resonate with you and bring a sense of harmony to the space. I love bringing rocks back from places I’ve visited. Especially, I love reminders of places that were joyful.

Air represents the intellectual and communicative self. Any time I need some linear thinking I try to connect to the air. (Hey my Aquarius friends!) Incense burning is great for this. I also love a fan going or a window open.

Fire represents the energetic and the passionate self. Candles, of course, are the easiest way to bring fire into your space. Light a candle of your favorite color to connect to your passion. Ever thought about why we like candles lit when we are in an amorous mood? Makes you think.

Finally, water, my favorite (I’m a Cancer) represents the compassionate and intuitive self. Water can be a little desk fountain or even just a bowl of water in a container you love.

Personal Altar or Shrine

Setting up a personal altar or shrine in your meditation space can provide a focal point for you. Place meaningful objects, such as crystals, photos, or anything that connects you to that space. You do not need anything fancy or special.

I have a root beer cap that I keep in mine. My late husband loved root beer. One day, I asked my angels and guides to give me a cheerful sign. I turned around, with no expectations, and sitting in my foyer on the floor was a single bottle cap from the rootbeer brand he used to drink. To me, that is a reminder.

Lighting

Dim, soft lighting in your meditation space can help create a tranquil and relaxing ambiance in your meditation space. Consider using fairy lights, Himalayan salt lamps, or other gentle lighting sources to illuminate the space without being too harsh or bright.

I love lots of light. So you could be like me and want to have lots of sun gleaming in your space. It is my sunbath without being in it too much.

Sacred Texts or Inspirational Books

Keep a few meaningful books or texts within reach to help you stay focused and inspired. I love my astrology books and tarot books. I find them comforting.

Soundscapes or Music

Playing soothing soundscapes, nature sounds, or meditative music can enhance the atmosphere of your meditation space and promote relaxation and mindfulness. Experiment with different types of music or sounds to find what resonates with you and helps you reach a deeper state of meditation.

I am not a music person. I tend to feel the music and creator too much. Yet, I love very simple music such as singing bowls or other low tones.

How do you choose? Try different types of music or sounds and pay attention to how your emotions feel. If you want energy, certain music will bring you energy. If you want peace, you will feel peace when you listen to it. You may also feel certain music in your body. I know that I feel light in different energy centers with a variety of music. It’s a fun experiment or study to perform on yourself.

Creating a metaphysical quiet space is a deeply personal and enriching experience that can nourish your soul and deepen your connection to the spiritual realm. By incorporating these 6 essential elements into your quiet space, you can cultivate a sacred sanctuary where you can retreat, reflect, and rejuvenate your mind, body, and spirit.
