What Does a Solar Eclipse Mean? 5 Fascinating Questions for Science, Spirituality & Astrology

What is a solar eclipse?
A solar eclipse happens when the Moon slides into a perfect alignment between the Earth and the Sun, bocking some or all of the light from the Sun. Throughout our known history, solar eclipses have held and developed meaning. Spiritually, they have been viewed as symbols for times of transformation, particularly endings and new beginnings.
As a child, I was somewhat afraid of any solar eclipse event. There were widespread fears that you would go blind if you looked at one. I was afraid that I would go blind because I forgot or because I randomly happened to look up during an eclipse. Never, however, did I know of anyone who had gone blind by looking at an eclipse.
TI wondered, “How can if make you go blind?” and “What exactly is happening?” Thus, I did what I could to learn about eclipses. As an adult, I still carry a little bit of fear of eclipses, but now, as a spiritual seeker, I find them fascinating.

Why does a solar eclipse happen?
There are three players in the dance of an eclipse: the Sun, the Earth, and the Moon.
The Moon revolves around the Earth until it is directly between the Earth and the Sun. This lineup, however, happens regularly but doesn’t always produce an eclipse of the Sun. This is because the Moon is usually somewhat tilted relative to the Earth’s orbit around the Sun. Yet, when there is a new moon* and the Sun lines up just right, a solar eclipse occurs.
*A new moon occurs when the moon is between the Earth and the Sun to the point that the Sun’s light is reflected only on the opposite side of the Moon.
Are new moons and solar eclipses the same thing?
No, they are not the same. Once a month the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun making the side facing us blacked out. A solar eclipse happens during one of these new moon phases when the alignment is perfect enough for the Moon to block the Sun.

What is the spiritual meaning of a solar eclipse?
Spiritual interpretations focus on the change in energy around us that is brought by a solar eclipse.
If we focus on the physical experience of an eclipse, we get an idea of its spiritual significance. When observing an eclipse, we see the brightness of things move into shadow. This is a transformation. For a time, all things are in the dark and obscured. Next, there is movement, and the Sun re-emerges: just as bright as it was.
The energy of an eclipse can help us focus on what we need to transform, and then it can help us transmute it into something else.
Here is an example of how this works.
Let’s say you want to improve your outlook on life because you are tired of your own negativity. As you approach the solar eclipse, your job is to identify those things that you are holding on to or things you see as negative.
Are you watching too much television, like the news or crime shows? Are you not separating yourself from people who add to your negativity? Are you angry with yourself for things you feel aren’t accomplished?
The time before the eclipse is time for identification.
Next, during the eclipse, try to allow feelings to wash over you. They. Will. Not. Last.
Feelings at their height are fleeting. Do not be afraid of them.
In my own life, at one time, I had to let go of intimacy in a relationship. One day I realized I was tired of my disappointment. During an eclipse, I decided to take action, and I set the intention to let it all go. I told myself that I was going to perform a kind of ritual to be free, and I was going to let an eclipse energy help me do that. I told myself, “I’m going into the next room, I’m shutting the door, and I’m going to sit and grieve this disappointment, once and for all. Then I’m done with it. When I emerge, I’m letting this expectation go.”
I did just that. I went into the room, and I sat down. I allowed myself to feel all my disappointment and grief and sadness. It hurt immensely, but I knew that something had to give. I was tired of those feelings in my life.

I cried. I silent screamed. I thrashed. I slammed my fists on my knees.
Slowly, but faster than I’d imagined, my disappointment and grief started to fade. As I acknowledged it and gave it as much voice as I could, it transformed out of the place it was in my emotions. When I got up and left the room, I felt lighter and glad I had left it all behind me. Done.
Letting it go took my eyes off my lack of it. The ritual helped me transform the negative emotion into peace.
Just a few short months later, a beautiful person returned to my life and helped me complete my healing. It worked out better than I could have imagined.
Thus, like the re-emergence of the Sun from behind the Moon, my transformation was complete.

What does an eclipse do for me?
Depending on the eclipse, they can affect ladscapes. Typically, there are earthquakes associated with eclipses, depending on the strength of the eclipse.
You may see world events that can affect you around the time of an eclipse. For example, the fall of the Berlin Wall occurred during an eclipse.
You may see very little occur during an eclipse, but you can use it to help you focus and transform items in your life that you want to change. We all need times like that.
