7 Ways to Define A Spiritual Connection Today

spiritual connection

Ever feel a spiritual connection with someone that just goes beyond an emotional or physical connection? Do you just seem to “get” each other? A spiritual connection can be one that goes beyond a normal connection. It is often identified by shared beliefs, the kind of beliefs that resonate with both of you.  Yet, how do you know if you really have a spiritual connection?

There are 7 factors to look at when evaluating whether or not you have a spiritual connection. If you have only one or two of these, then you probably do not have a spiritual connection. 3 or more of these characteristics could indicate anywhere from a slight to a strong spiritual connection.

7 Characteristics of a Spiritual Connection

1. Strong Emotional Connection

This is usually the characteristic that shows up first. We just feel something special and illuminated. Yet, by itself, this connection of emotion is not enough to identify a complete, true spiritual connection. The reason for that is that what you think is an emotional connection could be “limerence.”

Limerence is an intense emotional feeling of obsession that is pretty much one-sided, or you are never quite sure if your emotion is reciprocated. Among other characteristics, it includes heightened emotional responses to another person. Therefore, only strong emotion is not enough to establish a spiritual connection.

2. Ease of Experience

A spiritual connection with someone usually means you have an ease in his/her presence. Conversations just flow. You find yourself making jokes that just happen. You feel at peace in their presence. This kind of connection just happens. It is not manufactured.

3. A Sense of Understanding

You may feel a deep connection without needing to explain yourself. And, if you do try to explain yourself, you find that you really didn’t have to. That lover or friend finishes your sentences or, better yet, tells you what you are feeling. Ever had a friend verbalize what you were feeling in a way you couldn’t? That is a spiritual connection.

4. You Know Each Other From the Beginning

You may feel like you’ve known each other from the moment you met. It’s like you knew each other in another life. Without sharing details of your experience, you know that the object of your connection is on your side.

5. Shared Values & Beliefs
A spiritually connected person to you can share a common philosophical belief. Maybe you both follow the same spiritual leader. Maybe you both resonate with a certain motivational speaker. Maybe your spiritual paths converge under similar circumstances. Maybe you have similar spiritual experiences.

6. Shared Purpose
Because you share similar values and beliefs, you probably share the same purpose. A shared purpose could include a desire to teach or heal. It could be included in your profession, or it may be any purpose that nurtures your soul: being a parent, saving animals, cooking, etc.

How Can You Distinguish a Spiritual Connection from Other Connections?

It’s important to distinguish a spiritual connection from other types of relationships. While they share similarities, just because you have one of the following elements does not necessarily mean you have a spiritual connection.

  1. Physical Attraction: They may be pretty, but if you are just physically attracted to each other, the attraction will run its course. Eventually, once you have fully explored the attraction, one or both of you will expand past it. Now, you may have a lot of fun in the meantime, and usually, a physical attraction can be a part of a connection, but a physical attraction does not automatically equate to a spiritual connection.
  2. Creature Comfort: A spiritual connection is not based on a need for comfort or convenience. A mutual belief about how you are supposed to live is not the same as a spiritual connection, but it is a connection.
  3. Emotional Connection: We may get the “feels” for someone who reciprocates, but a spiritual connection goes much deeper. It involves having a sense of interconnectedness, including shared values.

The profoundness of a spiritual connection can be difficult to explain, but it is a bond that goes beyond the physical and emotional. It brings with it an interconnected engagement that is soul-nurturing and life-changing. If you happen upon one, enjoy it for all it is worth, because you are worth it!
