Why Does Paranormal Activity Seem to Increase in October?

October has a reputation.

Long before Halloween arrives, stores are filled with decorations, horror movies are making their rounds, and conversations about ghosts, spirits, and everything paranormal seem to become more common. By the time October rolls around, the season is already well underway.

But why does paranormal activity in October seem to get so much attention? Is there actually an increase, or are people simply more aware of what’s happening around them?

As a psychic medium who has experienced paranormal activity throughout my life, I find that question particularly interesting. For me, these experiences aren’t limited to a particular month or season. They’re part of my everyday life.

What I have noticed, however, is that October seems to make other people more receptive. People who might ordinarily dismiss a feeling, a dream, or something they’ve sensed in their home may become more willing to acknowledge it.

And I think there’s something worth exploring there.

Why Is Paranormal Activity in October Associated With Halloween?

October didn’t earn its paranormal reputation just because somebody decided ghosts and skeletons would make great Halloween decorations.

The connection goes back centuries.

One of the traditions associated with this time of year is Samhain, an ancient Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. In Irish folklore, this period was associated with supernatural beings and the Otherworld, a realm beyond the everyday human world. This belief is one reason paranormal activity in October has remained such a fascinating subject across generations.

Over time, different traditions and religious observances helped shape what we now recognize as Halloween.

There’s also a spiritual belief, still embraced by many people today, that the boundary between the physical and spiritual worlds becomes thinner during this time of year. Often referred to as the “thinning of the veil,” it’s associated with the possibility of greater interaction between the two realms.

For many who hold this belief, the thinning begins before October, with the veil considered thinnest around Halloween and Samhain. It’s not necessarily something that happens overnight simply because the calendar reaches October 31.

You can read more about the historical traditions surrounding Samhain and its connection to Halloween.

Interestingly, the idea of a veil isn’t exclusive to Halloween traditions. Growing up, I remember hearing older generations, particularly those with roots in Louisiana, Texas, and the South, refer to people being “born with a veil.” It was an expression associated with individuals believed to possess spiritual gifts or the ability to perceive things others couldn’t.

The expression has its own history, including a connection to babies born with a caul, a portion of the amniotic membrane covering the head or face. It’s a separate tradition from Samhain, but another example of how people have used the concept of a veil to describe spiritual perception.

Does October Heighten Spiritual Awareness?

I think one of the biggest differences during October is that people allow themselves to be more open.

Conversations about spirits, the afterlife, and paranormal experiences aren’t necessarily something people bring up casually throughout the year. Some may be concerned about how others will react, while others simply haven’t given their experiences much thought.

But once Halloween season approaches, those conversations become more commonplace. People start sharing stories, asking questions, and talking about things they might ordinarily keep to themselves. When people talk about paranormal activity in October, I think it’s worth considering how much their own awareness and receptivity may have changed.

When we’re more receptive, we may begin paying attention to things we’ve previously overlooked. Maybe it’s a dream that stays with you long after you’ve awakened, a feeling you can’t quite explain, or something that makes you more aware of your surroundings.

That doesn’t automatically mean you’re psychic or a medium. Intuition, psychic abilities, and mediumship are different, and it’s important to recognize those distinctions.

I’ve had people share a variety of experiences with me, from things happening in their homes to dreams and sensing presences. While some describe noticing more paranormal activity in October, I can’t say whether that means the activity itself has increased.

What I do believe is that people are allowing themselves to feel more, to be curious, and perhaps to consider possibilities they wouldn’t ordinarily entertain.

Should Paranormal Experiences Be Frightening?

Not necessarily. But I certainly understand why some people are afraid.

Have I ever been frightened by a paranormal experience? Absolutely. Especially when I was younger and didn’t fully understand what was happening.

Over time, as I gained more insight, my perspective changed.

I’ve encountered some very angry entities, and those experiences can be intimidating. But I’ve learned to separate what I’m sensing from my own emotional response. Recognizing that I’m picking up on anger, for example, helps me better understand the experience rather than immediately reacting out of fear.

And I would never criticize someone for being afraid. Trust, I’ve been there.

And not every spiritual encounter involves a person. I’ve had experiences with animals who have passed, including one of my own fur babies. Even years after his crossing the rainbow bridge, there have been moments when I’ve recognized my dog’s familiar scent. Those experiences are very different from encountering an angry entity, and they’re another reason I don’t automatically associate paranormal activity with fear.

Understanding my own experiences has made a tremendous difference, but that doesn’t mean everyone should automatically feel comfortable with theirs.

If you’re curious about how spirit activity can look like in a home, I’ve shared more of my experiences in When You Find Yourself Unexpectedly Living with Spirits.

Does Paranormal Activity Stop After Halloween?

Not in my experience.

The attention surrounding paranormal activity in October may be seasonal, but spiritual experiences certainly aren’t limited to one month of the year.

Perhaps October isn’t necessarily when more activity occurs. Perhaps it’s when more people give themselves permission to pay attention to what they’re feeling and experiencing.

For me, spiritual awareness has never been limited to a season, and I don’t believe curiosity about it should be either.

And if that awareness continues into November, December, or the middle of next summer?

Well, the calendar was never the deciding factor anyway.
