When You Find Yourself Unexpectantly Living with Spirits
Living with spirits/ghosts in your space might sound like the plot of a fictional novel or a movie plot, but for many of us who do, it’s just part of everyday life. Whether you’re deeply attuned to the spirit world or occasionally notice some unexplained activity, it’s absolutely possible to coexist with these unseen roommates. I’ll share some personal insights and practical tips to help you find harmony when living with spirits/ghosts in your home.
Understanding Different Spirits
Living with Spirits
First things first: Let’s talk about who or what might be sharing your space. They are not all Casper the Friendly Ghost, trust. Knowing their type can make a huge difference in how you live with spirits/ghosts.
Who’s There?
- Residual Spirits: These are like echoes of the past, replaying specific moments in time over and over. They’re not aware of you and won’t interact. I’ve seen a few of these while in Georgia; they were an absolute trip to witness in person.
- Alert Spirits: These spirits know you’re there and might try to communicate or make their presence known. Communication could be auditory, if your clairaudient or as a few in my house like to do, tip-toeing on the wood floors, messing with cabinet doors, or turning my motion lights on.
- Nature Spirits: Connected to the earth, these spirits often feel protective of natural elements. The couple who originally lived where I am (in the 40s) took care of my indoor and outdoor plants during the pandemic. How do I know? I inquired as to how my plants were flourishing under my “care”; I do not have a green thumb unless marked by pen or paint, and everything was thriving. Everything. I thanked them daily.
- Shadow Entities: This group can often be misunderstood; they can carry neutral or negative energy depending on their intent. Before I grasped setting intentional boundaries, I got some pretty funky energy in the house that would raise the fine hairs on the back of my neck.
- Guides and Ancestors: You want this group around. They often visit to offer guidance or protection. You can ask them to show up; sometimes, they are already hanging out, waiting for your acknowledgment. For me I know they are around because I can distinctly feel their presence.
Setting Boundaries
Think of living with spirits as similar to sharing a home with a new roommate. Boundaries are key. If something’s bothering you, don’t be afraid to speak up—ever.
How to Set Boundaries:
- Acknowledge Them: You can say, ” Hi there. I see you, and I feel your presence. Thank you for protecting and looking after this space, but I need peace here if you are to stay.”
- Claim Your Space: Use clear language, like, ” I get that you like the energy here, but this is my home, and it must be a calm and safe space.”
- Create Energetic Dividers: Place salt lines, crystals, or other objects to define your space. Use what feels right for you and your space. I use a combination of salt lines and crystals.
- Rituals Work Wonders: Smudging with sage or using sound (like clapping or bells) can help clear and define boundaries. I like to cleanse my house with Palo Santos, Sage, and my crystal singing bowl, depending on which one strikes my fancy at the moment. Incense work, too!
Creating a Harmonious Environment
Harmony should always be the goal. Creating a balanced and welcoming environment sets the tone for how spirits interact with you and your space.
Ways to Balance Your Space:
- Declutter: A tidy home often equates to tidy energy. Clear and clean spaces feel lighter and more peaceful. Makes sense, right? I’ve got you if you’re feeling overwhelmed or need help figuring out how to declutter.
- Use Sound: Music that speaks to your spirit and raises your frequency/vibe, chimes, or singing bowls can uplift your home’s energy.
- Bring in Nature: Plants(yes, plant parents, I’m looking at you), fresh flowers, or even a water feature can stabilize the energy.
- Light It Up: Candles or incense create a soothing atmosphere and can aid in setting the intention for peace.
Chatting with Spirits
If you feel like the spirits want to communicate, why not start a conversation? It can be as simple or structured as you’re comfortable with.
Tips for Safe and Respectful Communication:

- Ground Yourself First: If you are new to speaking with ghosts/spirits, take a moment to center your energy so you feel calm and balanced. I like to imagine roots growing from the bottom of my feet down to the earth’s center.
- Be Clear: Speak plainly. I’ve said something like, “Hey, I’ve been picking up hints via the flashing lights and the cabinets creaking that you’re in the space. Do you need help?”
- Tools Can Help: If you’re comfortable, you can use tools like pendulums or tarot cards for clarity.
- Keep an Open Mind: Signs like dreams, flickering lights, animal/insect presence, or a specific song on the radio could be responses.
Protecting Your Energy
Living with spirits
As a person who has been living with spirits for almost my entire life(read: a few decades), I’ve realized that while most spirits mean no harm, protecting your energy is always wise—just in case. Think of it like locking your doors and turning on the alarm at night: it just makes sense. I’ve been in the company of a few mischievous characters who liked to turn on lights in my house and turn off lights in my car. Good times.
How to Stay Protected:

- Visualize a Shield: I like to picture myself surrounded by a bubble of white light and also create one around my home. If I’m using my car that day, I surround it with one, too.
- Wear Crystals: Amethyst, black tourmaline, and obsidian are great for grounding and protection. I always have a crystal in whatever bag I take with me and a crystal in the pocket of what I’m wearing or as jewelry.
- Set Up an Altar: This is optional, as all things suggested are, but a small space with protective items like candles or meaningful symbols can be a powerful anchor. I have one and do my best to keep it clean.
- Cleanse Your Space Regularly: I can’t emphasize this point enough: Smudge your space or use sprays with essential oils like lavender or cedar. Energy, like dust, can build up in your space; you’ve got to clear it out! I like to cleanse on the weekend because then I can start the week anew, but it doesn’t really matter what day; what matters is that you are consistent.
Embracing the Positive
Not all spirits are disruptive. Some bring comfort, guidance, or even inspiration. If you feel a spirit’s presence is positive, you can lean into that connection.
How to Honor Friendly Spirits:
- Leave Little Offerings: Flowers, a little trinket, or even a glass of water can show respect. Who doesn’t love a gift?
- Create a Cozy Corner: A small area with meaningful items can serve as a welcoming space for them. Everybody needs a cozy nook.
- Say Thank You: Just as you appreciate being seen, a simple acknowledgment of their presence goes a long way. I like to thank the spirits/ghosts for watching my house while I’m gone and keeping it safe from foolishness/tomfoolery.
What If Things Get Weird?
Sometimes, spirits can overstep or bring in unsettling energy. When you’re living with spirits, and that happens, you’ve got to take action.
Steps to Handle Difficult Spirits:

- Identify the Issue: Try to interpret if the activity is residual or intentional.
- Don’t Hesitate to Ask for Help: Reaching out to a trusted medium or spiritual healer never hurts if you’re unsure of how to proceed or need assistance with the spirit(s).
- Removal Techniques: Firmly ask the spirit to leave or perform rituals designed to clear stubborn energies. For example, “I understand you may feel a way, but that energy and foolery is not welcome in this space. You need to leave.”
- Invite Positive Energy Into Your Home: Prayers, meditation, music that feels good to you, and plants are a few things that can bring that positive energy back in. If it makes you happy and makes your space feel great, get into it.
Trust Your Intuition
Your intuition is your best tool for navigating life with spirits. If something feels off/wrong, trust that feeling. If it feels right/calm, embrace it. You’re more attuned than you might realize.
Staying Grounded in Everyday Life
Living with Spirits
Sharing your home with spirits doesn’t mean it has to take over your life. Stay grounded by maintaining a healthy balance between the spiritual and the everyday.
Tips for Staying Grounded:
- Get Moving: Exercise or take a walk in nature to recharge your energy.
- Focus on Relationships: Keep connections with your friends and family.
- Set Spirit-Free Times: Decide when you want to tune in and when it’s just your time. I like to utilize a candle to indicate when they can come to talk to me. If the candle is lit, talk to me; if not, it’s not your time to shine, friends. Does it always work? No, as some spirits, like people, are persistent, but I’d say it works most of the time.

With understanding, respect(from both sides), and a little effort, you can create a peaceful coexistence that works for everyone involved.
