The Root: The Strength of Your 1st Chakra

Muladhara, or the root chakra, comes from Sanskrit, which means “root” and “existence.” It is the first of the seven chakras comprising our energy centers. The root center affects the adrenal glands, bladder, kidneys, lower extremities, and spine. So, if these are problem areas you connect with, allow me to shed more light on how your root chakra works.

The root chakra is the foundation for your energy centers and, when grounded, positively affects your daily life. Located at the base of your spine, it makes sense that it be considered the foundation from which all other building blocks, or energy centers, derive stability. This is also the control center for core issues such as security, basic needs, and how we view ourselves in our physical form.

When blocked, some physical symptoms include weight loss, digestive issues, fatigue, increased anxiety, low self-esteem, clumsiness, and difficulty concentrating. This is not inclusive. Other symptoms can be present; keep reading to see where they fit with your energy.

Chakra Underactivity

An underactive root chakra occurs when you have closed or blocked your energy. Childhood traumas or insecurities can cause foundation chakra dysfunction. It also happens when events threaten our feeling of security or appear to threaten that security.

An underactive root can cause you to become restless and unsettled in life, creating negative emotions such as anxiety, panic, anger, frustration, and resentfulness. Again, this has a ripple effect when blocked, as it lowers self-esteem because you begin to look at the world around you pessimistically. Feeling overwhelmed, disorganized, and having issues with focusing often indicate that your root chakra is underactive.

Chakra Overactivity

Opposite to being blocked, overactive means there are no rest periods, and you are working overtime for yourself. You might be able to recognize this when you feel annoyed or angered at the slightest provocation. This is when you have a short fuse with no clue about the cause. You may also become obsessive and overindulge in areas of your life revolving around money, food, and sex.

Taking a moment to breathe, center yourself, and find the cause of these feelings in these times is essential. It is easier to settle energy and begin feeling balanced when you can identify where they are coming from or why they are happening. This takes practice, but if you work at it daily, you can take control of your life and improve your daily functioning.

Alignment and Functioning

As discussed previously, our chakras can be overactive or underactive, but they can also be aligned. When the root chakra functions optimally, you typically have a sense of security. This secure feeling ripples out, creating clear thinking and concentration, allowing you to set goals and obtain them through action. Alignment also helps you feel steady and calm when changes occur around you. This is because you feel more flexible and resourceful, especially in challenging times.

Grounding and Cleansing Your Energy

Envision red! This is the color of your root chakra. Take a moment to envision your red energy center, at the base of your spine, as rotating energy. This energy spreads beneath you like roots from a tree, deep into Mother Earth. As those roots grow, exhale the negative feelings, allowing anything that does not serve you to flow through your roots into the earth. Mother Earth can transmute all that negativity into positive energy of light and love. Allow that positive energy to flow up your roots into your body. Let it flow through every inch of your being, taking over the areas once occupied by negativity.

This is a daily, or twice daily, practice that you can do, and it takes less than 5 minutes. The more you do it, and the longer you meditate, the more balanced you will feel, and your chakra alignment stays strong. Daily life gets us all, which is a means to release all that while accepting each day’s positive aspects.
