6 Signs You’re Out of Energetic Alignment and How to Get Back on Track

Teachers are asked to make an average of 1,300 decisions a day. Yes, studies have been done. So, as a one-time high school English teacher, keeping myself from going “out of energetic alignment” was rarely a choice I felt I had. If I could get in alignment, my monkey brain quickly threw me out because I was interrupted, asked a question, or had any number of distracting interactions with teenagers.

Yet, in hindsight, what a great training ground to develop me personally and spiritually. I realized that the more I practiced fixing my energetic alignment, the better I got at it. And, I realized, that the more I squelched my alignment, the worse it felt. I began to study and categorize my alignment whenever I went out of alignment. As a result, I have identified 6 ways that you can tell if you are out of alignment with yourself. Some are common to the study of alignment, and others will make you think differently about who you are right now.
1. Do you feel anxious? You are out of energetic alignment.
Feeling anxious for no specific reason is a mouthpiece for the lack of alignment within you. Between classes, as students walked the halls, we teachers were required to stand in the hallway and supervise. I can’t tell you how many times I found myself not breathing–a sure sign of anxiety, and certainly not in energetic alignment. I would stop, take a deep breath, and let it out slowly. My anxiety about any number of aspects of my job was reflected in my breathing, and I wasn’t even specifically thinking about anything anxiety ridden.
This anxiety stopped when I started to work on myself. The more I loved myself, did things for myself, meditated, studied happy things, and uplifting things, the better I felt. I realized at some point that I hadn’t had to remind myself to breathe in quite a long while. Now, when I feel anxious, when my breathing holds, I stop and self-talk. “The universe is working for me at all times. I am safe. I am special. I am loved…” I will say anything that helps me feel better and get back into alignment.

2. Do you just feel out of sorts or out of place? You may be feeling out of energetic alignment
How many times have you just felt like your skin was crawling? Or, have you ever wondered if the astrology around you was influencing you because you couldn’t put your finger on what was bothering you? That is your inner self talking to you, telling you that you are out of energetic alignment. It’s okay to not know where it is coming from; it is more than enough to be aware that you are feeling something. That discord is your inner wisdom trying to bring something to the surface.
For example, that guy on the dating site looks good on paper, but somehow your texts with him just feel off. Or, that possible new boss just doesn’t seem quite right for you…probably your inner self is not aligning with her.
For a while, I was on a couple of (okay, a few) dating sites. Over time, I began to test my intuition. I would go out with a gentleman or meet for a drink, even though I knew I didn’t feel energetic alignment. Every. Single. Time. I was validated about my feelings. Also, a couple of fellas that I felt alignment with turned out to be really fun guys.
Over time, I became aware that when I am in energetic alignment, I feel happy, joyful, energetic, etc. When I feel anxious, bland, or uneasy, I know it is time to do a self-check. It is always my higher self showing me that whatever is in my focus is not for me.

3. Do you feel exhausted or habitually tired? It may be from being out of energetic alignment
Have you ever just felt bone tired? Most of us have.
Let me ask another question. Have you ever felt very tired, yet energized and ready for more? There’s a difference between the two. Isn’t there!
Exhaustion from doing something you enjoy or love is a tiredness that feels good. You feel like you earned that tired. It is a trophy for work well done or enjoyed. Exhaustion that racks your body, not in a good way, is a sign of being out of energetic alignment. Usually, it comes from not just physical work, but from coping with doing things you don’t want to do. That is being out of energetic alignment. Our battery runs down. Our reserve energy gets depleted.
So, think about yourself. Are you refusing help? Are you trying to live up to a concept that you should do it all? Do you have to have everything under control? Could you just stop now and go to sleep?
At the end of 2018, that was me. My husband and I had created 4 online magazines, and we were publishing at least twice a month. Along with that, I was a bookkeeper, magazine designer, and ad creator. Oh, and by the way, I worked full-time as a high school English teacher. My husband was on hemodialysis, which we did at home.
I let my doctor talk me into training me to run the machine. I had an autistic son at home that I home-schooled. I lived in a constant state of exhaustion. Plus, I did everything around the house, except for cooking (I’m a terrible cook.) Eventually, I resented everyone around me because I had to do it all. I had no time for myself. I remember thinking, “All I want to do is just take 15 minutes and go get a Coke.” Talk about “out of energetic alignment.”
I began to sleep. I began to just sit. And my life has so, so, so much improved.
Time and the universe worked out a great deal of my life. My husband passed, my son grew up, I stopped producing the magazines. I’ve realized that I can “have it all’ but I don’t have to ‘do it all’ in the process.
When you notice that your batteries are more empty than they are charged and your energy levels are affected, it’s a red flag to start slowing down a little and look for your energetic alignment.

4. Do you use the word “overwhelmed” to describe yourself? You may be out of energetic alignment
We can all relate to that familiar feeling, can’t we? The overwhelming sensation of having too much on our plates and not enough time to tackle it all. It’s a common experience that many of us face. However, it doesn’t have to be this way. When we are in tune with our true selves and align with our core values, we are more equipped to handle being overwhelmed and stop it from consuming us.
Overwhelment used to be my constant friend. It was there when I went to bed. It slept with me and woke me up at night. It got up and made coffee with me in the morning. It drove with me. It ate with me, etc.
I have learned that being overwhelmed doesn’t have to be a permanent state of being. By asking ourselves critical questions like “What do I truly desire? What do I require for my well-being? What no longer serves me? What brings me joy?” We can begin to navigate away from being overwhelmed and towards a more harmonious existence of energetic alignment.
How do you tackle being overwhelmed?
First, realize, somewhere in there is a lie. Are you thinking you have to do it all? Are you believing that no one else can do it like you can? Are you thinking that you have to make all the sacrifices?
Identify where the lies are that give you the feeling you are not enough. You are enough. The law of attraction says you are so free, you can choose bondage. What if this time for this day, you chose your comfort first?
Go get that coke or ice cream. Eat it in your car. DON’T SHARE! You’ll be surprised how that one moment of letting something go will give you such peace, and it can set you on a trajectory of more peace and energetic alignment.

5. Do you feel restless? You may be out of energetic alignment
Ever feel like just walking away? Walk away from your family. Walk out of your job. Walk out of your relationship.
I’ve had several times over the years when I’ve felt like this. Bathing the dog that just pooped all over the floor, the phone ringing, a repairman at the door, my brain on overstimulate with my to-do list…the desire to just walk out when everything got to be too much.
And you know, many people do just that. Walk away. Go out for hotdogs and never come back.
You don’t want to create that kind of trauma in others, but you do need to realize that feeling restless is a surefire sign that something, deep within you, is missing and out of energetic alignment.

6. Have you forgotten what makes you joyful? You may be out of energetic alignment.
When I was divorcing my first husband, I had 2 little kids and no job. I was severely depressed because i did not want the marriage to end, but I had no choice. I went to therapists hoping to be heard and to get help coping. Every single one of them asked me, “What do you do for yourself?”
I never had an answer. I didn’t know what to do for myself. I’d been a mom and a housekeeper, and a personnel manager. I felt I had nothing to bring me joy.
And that lack of answer is not unusual. Many times, if we’ve worked hard to get somewhere in life, we’ve focused on the goal, the work. We can become unable to think of anything that brings light to our lives.

So, what do we do?
Start thinking about a fantasy. If you had a magic wand and you could get anything you want, what would that be? Play with that thought. In other words, play with the place in energetic alignment with what you want.
Remember happy memories. What made you happy in the past? Maybe it was a Coke. Start with that. Then expand. Eventually, broaden your memories to things you did as a kid that made you happy. Roller skate? Read a book? Ride a bike? Go to a movie? Get involved in community theater?
Now pick something and relive that fun again, the best you can. What did you do that gave you happiness?
Even if you are only able to go to YouTube and find videos about something, do it. If you don’t have time to sit and read, get an audiobook. I love the mini “vaycay” I get with a book I’m listening to while I do yard work (ick).
At the very, very least, brainstorm options. Then return to the list later. You may find one that trips your trigger.
Overall, in this 3D life, we can find ourselves feeling flat, disconnected, joyless, empty, bored, etc. At times, we all may feel that we no longer know who we are, let alone what we want, crave, or desire.
One other thing that is true is that we all want to feel good, which is always energetic alignment.
Do you find yourself eating too much, drinking too much, looking for too much outside validation, you are trying to feed a need. We often self-medicate when we are out of alignment without even thinking about it. Yet, when we start becoming honest with ourselves about what we really desire and crave, and then take steps towards it, symptoms of hunger for other things evaporate.
What does it mean to be out of energetic alignment?
Being out of energetic alignment means your thoughts, emotions, and actions no longer feel connected to your authentic self. Many people describe it as feeling anxious, overwhelmed, restless, emotionally drained, or like something is “off” even if they can’t explain why. The goal of energetic alignment is to create more peace, clarity, joy, and emotional balance.
What are the signs that you are out of alignment?
Common signs include:
- Feeling anxious without a clear reason
- Constant exhaustion or burnout
- Feeling overwhelmed by everyday life
- Restlessness or the urge to escape
- Losing interest in activities that once brought joy
- Feeling disconnected from yourself or your intuition
While everyone experiences these feelings occasionally, persistent patterns may indicate it’s time to reconnect with yourself.
Can anxiety be a sign of being out of alignment?
For many people, yes. Anxiety can sometimes be your body’s way of telling you that your current thoughts, environment, relationships, or responsibilities are no longer matching your inner needs. While anxiety can also have medical or psychological causes, noticing when it appears can help you identify areas of your life that deserve more attention and self-care.
How do I get back into energetic alignment?
There is no single method that works for everyone, but many people find it helpful to:
- Spend quiet time alone
- Practice meditation or mindfulness
- Journal about their thoughts and feelings
- Get enough rest
- Set healthy boundaries
- Make time for activities that bring genuine joy
- Listen to their intuition instead of constantly pleasing others
Small daily habits often create the biggest changes over time.
Why do I feel exhausted all the time?
Chronic exhaustion isn’t always caused by physical activity. Emotional stress, people-pleasing, constant decision-making, and living in ways that don’t align with your values can leave you mentally and emotionally depleted. If fatigue persists, it’s also important to discuss it with a healthcare professional to rule out underlying medical conditions.
What is the difference between being tired and being out of alignment?
Feeling tired after doing something meaningful or enjoyable is normal and often satisfying. Feeling emotionally drained, resentful, or depleted even after ordinary daily tasks may be a sign that you’re ignoring your own needs or living in ways that no longer support your well-being.
Why do I feel overwhelmed all the time?
Feeling overwhelmed often happens when responsibilities exceed your emotional capacity, or when you believe you must do everything yourself. Taking time to reassess priorities, ask for help, and let go of unrealistic expectations can help restore a greater sense of balance.
Can losing joy be a sign of energetic misalignment?
Yes. Forgetting what makes you happy or feeling disconnected from hobbies, creativity, and personal interests can be a sign that you’ve spent too much energy caring for everyone else while neglecting yourself. Reconnecting with simple pleasures can be an important step toward feeling more aligned.
How can I reconnect with my intuition?
Many people strengthen their intuition by slowing down and paying attention to how situations, people, and opportunities make them feel. Meditation, journaling, spending time in nature, and reducing constant distractions can all help you hear your inner guidance more clearly.
Is energetic alignment connected to spiritual growth?
Many spiritual traditions teach that living in alignment with your authentic self supports personal growth, inner peace, and a greater sense of purpose. Whether you view energetic alignment as a spiritual practice, a mindfulness practice, or simply emotional self-awareness, the goal is the same: creating a life that feels more genuine, peaceful, and fulfilling.
